Abstract:
Based on the EM-DAT (OFDA / CRED International Disaster Database), the characteristics of floods and their spatial and temporal characteristics in Asian-Pacific region were analyzed and discussed. The results show that (1) there is an obvious increasing trend of the floods from 1990 to 2010, and the average death and economic loss caused by floods are increasing in the Asia-Pacific region. (2) In spatial, the number of floods is the most in Southeast Asia, the death is the highest in South Asia and East Asia, while the affected people and economic loss is the highest in East Asia. (3) From the aspect of nation, the numbers of floods in China and India are more than other counties in Asia-Pacific region. However, the highest economic loss caused by flood disaster occured in North Korea, and the most death occured in Nepal. (4) Recent years, disaster reduction has been promoted greatly in this region but there is still a long way left for South Asia and other countries such as North Korea, Nepal, China, India, Japan and South Korea to enhance their capacity of disaster reduction in order to bring down the death and economic loss.
