Study on mechanical performance of PDMAEMA hydrogel with pH and temperature sensitivity

Abstract:
The poly 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA) homopolymer hydrogel was prepared by the free radical polymerization in aqueous solution at 35 ℃, using the N, N′-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) as cross-linker, potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator. The pH and temperature sensitivity, morphology of PDMAEMA hydrogel were studied by swelling degree measurements and SEM. The mechanical performance of this hydrogel was evaluated by compressure and creeping experiments, using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results show that the PDMAEMA hydrogel has double sensitivities in temperature and pH. The results from mechanical analysis suggest that the hydrogel has certain intensity and excellent viscoelastic properties.
