Analysis of characteristics and benefits of urban sprawl in Xi′an city from 2000 to 2013

Abstract:
Based on the spatial analysis of GIS, the Landsat images were used to extract the urban boundary of Xi′an city in 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2013, the characteristics of Xi′an city were explored by quadrant and buffer analysis and the efficiency of economic, social and environment were evaluated. The study showed that the sprawl of construction land in Xi′an city was rapid from 2000 to 2013, and the speed was fastest in 2010—2013. The average growth rate is 5.81%. The south, north, northwest is the main extension direction, and 6~18 km from the bell tower is the rural expansion scope. The economic efficiency of urban sprawl in Xi′an city was very well, on the contrary, the social and environment efficiency declined over the past 14 years.It reflected that the construction land expansion faster than population expansion and the heat island area expand rapidly, especially in the high-speed urban sprawl zone.
