Abstract:
Famous as a scholar painter, Wang Wei’s landscape paintings didn’t take a high place in the world of painting in the Tang Dynasty. His paintings failed to attract attention till the late days of the dynasty and the Five Dynasties, and became much admired by scholars and officials in the Song and the Ming Dynasty. The reason for this is that, in terms of painting contents and techniques stressed in the Tang Dynasty, Wang Wei was obviously inferior to Wu Daozi, Li Sixun and the like. From changes in aesthetic styles, the strong, heroic, open and luxurious tastes of appreciating beauty of literature and art in the Tang Dynasty were incompatible with the silent and quiet style of Wang Wei’s paintings. However, as people’s hobby of artistic consumption gradually turned to reserved and delicate taste, Wang’s paintings began to be accepted by more and more people. In terms of changes in painting acceptors, the place of Wang’s paintings rose gradually because of gradual changes of accepting groups from the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty and different acceptant tendencies generated from this.
