Abstract:
The Fupoetics in the Yuan Dynasty prior to The Criticism of Ancient Fupoetry Styles divided into northern Fupoetics and southern Fupoetics. Northern Fupoetics went back to the Jin Dynasty, basically taking a negative attitude to metrical verses and Fupoems of the dynasty. This Fupoetic school divided into a radical group and a mild group. As representatives of the radical group, Hao Jing and his like vigorously advocated and wrote oldstyle Fupoems, insisting that Fupoems of the Chu Kingdom and the Han Dynasty should be set as the models of writing, which directly encouraged the establishment of the view of “regarding the style of Li Sao as the original form and the Fupoetry of the Han Dynasty as the orthodox school” by Zu Yao. However, Wang Yun and his like, who belonged to the mild school, regarded metrical verses and Fupoetry as the stepping stone to officialdom, highly praising metrical verses and Fupoetry of the Tang and Song Dynasties and hoping to remove the malpractices in metrical verses and Fupoetry of the Jin Dynasty. In contrast, the southern Fupoetics succeeded the traditions of the Song Dynasty but made criticism of them if necessary. But Fupoets in the south generally advocated and wrote oldstyle Fupoems after the imperial examination was restored by the Yuan court. Southern Fu-poetics regarded the argumentative style of Fupoetry essentially as old Fupoetry, which expressed opinions of most Fupoets in the south.
