Abstract:
In ancient times, the pond referred to a main irrigation works in the reach of the Huai River, which played a comprehensive role in irrigation, aquaculture and river network. The Wild-goose-halting Pond found its earliest record in “The History of the Han Dynasty”. In times of the West and East Han Dynasties, the pond belonged to the prefecture of Runan and grealy influenced the development of current agricultural production. However, its record in the later documents was a great confusion. An obvious lost article was found in The Book of Waterways but the records in The Geographical Volume of The History of the Sui Dynasty and The Illustrated Annuals of Yuanhe County were contradicted with that in The Book of Waterways. The paper attempts to re-interpret the temporal and spatial connection in historical documents by reviewing former results so as to elaborate the geographical outline of the Wild-goose-halting Pond in history. The study shows that the records in The Book of Waterways and in The Annuals of the Sui Dynasty make little difference. By compensating for the record in The Book of Waterways and analyzing the distribution of the ancient remains. The historical location of “the Wild-goose-halting Pond” should be in an area east of the Xicheng-Xincai Railway, anong the Rushui River, Shenshui River and the Huaishui River.
