Abstract:
One of significant phenomena in the world of modern China drama was translation and performance of English plays, in which some appropriate Chinesizing strategies had to be adopted. In translating the English plays the original story had to be re-set to a certain place and a particular time in China to add some realistic elements under a changed setting and assume some epical looks. The names of the characters and their dialogues were usually given special implications in native culture, which helped to make the audience feel familiar and warm with finely-treated visual and aural elements, such as props and background music. It was by the above-mentioned means that those exotic characters and stories were successfully Chinesized, whose experience and lesson offer some significant references for present and future development of Chinese drama.
