Abstract:
The ceremony of wedding recorded in Ceremony and Propriety: Ceremonial Procedure of Wedding had a great influence on traditional marriage customs in our country. This affected not only traditional marriage customs themselves but also traditional marital conception and thought of women in our country. According to Ceremony and Propriety: Ceremonial Procedure of Wedding, marriage was a great issue concerning the family’s prosperity. A messenger to establish “happiness between two sexes”, the woman ought to carry many responsibilities: her body to be enveloped to surely prevent bringing about any disorder to the man’s family, and she to be “obedient to her man” after “being married” to guarantee sustenance of “happiness between two sexes”. Although marriage was realized through a combination between man and woman, no man’s requirements and criteria were expressed in the ceremony of marriage and its symbolic meaning. This was because the man acted only as a medium of the woman’s marriage whereas it was the woman who would carry the responsibility to preserve the stability of marriage and harmony of the family.
