Abstract:
Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, several sophisticated versions of The History of Modern Chinese Literature have been composed and published. However, all these different versions of literary history showed a common symptom in compiling the size of selections and writing about AntiJapanese literature: they all devoted the heaviest description to literature in liberated areas but the slightest to literature in Kuomintanggoverned regions, particularly that in Chongqing the second capital. This showed those literary historians’ overcautious and indecisive attitude and style of blindly following the established and avoiding the classic conception of history writing. As a consequence, the history of AntiJapanese literature in Chongqing the second capital has remained hidden for a long time. Thus it is one of the leading tasks to the literary historians in this century to reperceive the double meaning of historical facts of AntiJapanese literature in Chongqing, further reflect the causes for such problems and clarify and readjust our conception of history writing.
