Abstract:
The city and the country play different roles in Lu Yao’s novels. As Lu Yao showed in his novels, Chinese revolution had a deep influence on the course of China’s modernization. “The countrymen going to the town” marked a necessary road of transforming from traditional agricultural society to modernization, and simultaneously was the key plot of Lu’s works, the overlapping and contradiction between which depicted a “revolutioncharacteristic” road to China’s modernization. His rural literary characters gave off immense emotional energy in the course of “going to the town” and showed a contradictory attitude and different symbolic meanings of “the town” and “the country” in their minds. All these resulted from the peculiar course of Chinese revolution and ideology.
