Abstract:
Western Marxism criticized alienated consumerism as an instrument of political rule, a means of survival and the source of ecological crisis. It pointed out that the harm of values of consumerism lay in its digestion of people’s ability of criticism and negation and political consciousness and causing nonproductive sick personality and ecological crisis. Unlike applied ethics which regards consumptive ethics as a sort of economic ethics, western Marxism based its values of consumptive ethics on philosophic ontology and criticism of capitalist system, emphasizing the importance of getting rid of consumerist ideology to the realization of human freedom and emancipation.
