Abstract:
Zhang Zai’s school of Guanzhong contains a rich doctrine of ecological philosophy. Zhang Zai introduced the proposition of “the world ought to be cared for” in his Western Memorials, which not only succeeded and synthesized the ecological intelligence of the antiquity, but also deeply experienced the problems in current environment. Zhang regarded the world as the object of moral concern, which showed his defense of natural order, his respect for other loving things, and his concern for nonliving existences. Zhang’s affirmation of the value of the order of nature, his ethical selfconsciousness in worshipping the world, and his integrity of the doctrine of “caring for the world” formed the framework of his ecological philosophy. And the implications of his ecological ethics coincide interestingly with modern ecological philosophy.
