Abstract:
In the Tang Dynasty worship of Buddhism was very popular among eunuchs. A study of the newlycollected epitaphs of an eunuch and his wife in Xi’an Tombstone Museum reveals the ideological origin of their worship. According to the epitaph, the eunuchs in the Tang Dynasty chose to worship Buddhism either to seek protection from monks, or avoid disasters, or to recover from bad diseases, or to avoid jealousy out of being overfavored.
