Abstract:
Some results have come to the public out of studies on the tea-growing areas in the Tang Dynasty, but there are many blanks, and so is the case with studies on those in the Five Dynasties. In fact, there were 56 tea-growing prefectures in the Tang Dynasty, distributed mainly in the middle and lower reaches of the Huaihe River and the Yangtze River. By the Five Dynasties, the number was increased up to 77 prefectures, expanding from those Tang prefectures to southern Hunan and Hubei, and some parts of Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan. The steady expansion of tea-growing areas laid a solid foundation for further growth of tea production in the North and South Song Dynasties.
