Abstract:
During the Sui and the Tang Dynasty, business market in Chang’an showed its prosperity in the following ways: 1. unprecedented increase of businesses, restaurants, shops and inns; 2. businessmen trading in Chang’an from different parts of the world; 3. a faster increase of kinds and sorts of commodity than the former dynasties; 4. an apparent growth of trades whose division became more elaberate; 5. a gradual break away from traditional town fair. The prosperity of Chang’an trade market owed much to such favorable factors as the integration of the country in the two dynasties, social security, unification of currency, advanced land and water transportation and clear passage of trade line in western China, development social economy in the Guanzhong region, and the peculiar status of Chang’an as the capital of the nation.
