Abstract:
The “General Specification Chinese Character Table” has been released for five years now. Its formulating work has three successful experiences, namely the use of modern scientific and technological means, full consultation, and scientific and feasible formulating principles. There are five main achievements: adjusting the contradiction between the existing Chinese character specifications; restoring some variant characters; including characters, making quantification and grading in a scientific way; increasing the numbers of characters used in special fields; and sorting out the relations between simplified and traditional, orthographic and variant characters. The problems in the implementation of the “General Specification Chinese Character Table” result from the following: unfamiliarity and lack of conditions lead to failure of implementation, misunderstandings cause wrong implementation and hardships in the implementation which stem from the fact there are no bases in the use of the characters outside the table. To promote the implementation of the “General Specification Chinese Character Table”, we should strengthen publicity and implementation, strengthen the guidance of implementation, study and solve related problems, formulate supporting standards, and prepare for revision.
