Abstract:
This research, based on the data of language use and language attitude among Yunjing Villagers of Ruili City in Yunnan Province, by gathering from questionnaires, interviews, and onstage observation, examines the language and cultural life in the border village. The result shows that the Dai language serves as the major means of communication among the villagers, and most villagers are bilingual speakers of Dai and Chinese. In the context of family and social contact, the villagers mainly use the Dai language and Chinese dialects. They hereby set a higher value on Putonghua and Chinese than the Dai language in term of social status and privilege. However, most people wish that Dai language could be offered in local primary schools to better serve the Chinese minority language media enterprise.
