Abstract:
Maps of 14 cities and towns in the Shengjing area of China are collected in the Library of Congress, which were made secretly by a Japanese military officer. This series of maps are of the earlier maps of Chinese cities and towns which were drawn with modern cartographic technology, reflecting the form and internal structure of these cities and towns at that time, as well as topography, military facilities, and land and water transportation in their vicinity, of great academic importance to the study on their early urban shape and restructure of Chinese cities and towns in earlier modern times. The maps are an important material of the study of Chinese urban maps made by foreigners. The maps, however, are not fine enough or even have many problems, which we need to pay attention to.
