Abstract:
Many items in the catalogue of calligraphy and painting in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially the fifteen of the sixteen items about The Remarks on the Paintings Revised by the Baoyan Studio, proved no doubt that the book’s author was Dong Qichang rather than Mo Shilong. The last item, though with no definite evidence in the catalogue, was quite likely to have been written by Dong Qichang. The Remarks on the Paintings Revised by the Baoyan Studio was likely to have transcribed from Dong’s volume of On Painting in The Catalogue of Calligraphy and Painting Collected in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. There was not an evidence to support the view that Mo Shilong was the author of The Remarks on the Paintings Revised by the Baoyan Studio up till now. To sum up, Dong Qichang was the real author of the work for it was Dong who introduced the theory of Northern and Southern schools.
