Abstract:
With his prose writing of most global thematic implication symbolized by Los Angel as a globalized metropolitan, Liu Huangtian has vigorously promoted the development of modern overseas Chinese prose writing. Liu’s prose writing is characteristic in three ways. First of all, Liu’s prose, which goes beyond ethnic, race and culture, possesses an ideological implication of human culture and cosmopolitism. Next, as the most classic accomplishment, his prose reveals a series of global issues, such as nostalgia, immigrants, multiculture, realization of individual life made daily complicated by human concern with the community of a species and considerations on gender, sex and ethnic group, in different phases of globalization, especially in “the period of uncertainty”. Finally, Liu presents temperament philosophy in a distinctive “nostalgic mode” in times of globalization, highlighting the different voice of a new generation of immigrants’ survival in times of globalization. His identity as a “pseudoforeigner” and construction of cultural coordinates makes his prose the most cosmopolitan literary text of new immigrant literature. In terms of Liu’s prose, we can clearly understand the primary thematic dimensions and characteristics of new immigrant literature as part of world Chinese literature.
