Abstract:
Temples in the Tang Dynasty served not only as the leading carriers of religious activities but as the centres of popular cultural activities. This was mainly because, with the support of powerful political and economic strengths, they enjoyed political support and economic foundation as the centres of popular cultural activities. Moreover, religious activities and secularization of religion promoted the shaping of popular culture centered by the temples. Rich humanistic resources brought about masses of tourists to the temples, attracting broad audiences to performances of popular culture. Finally, the temples' beautiful environment of gardens and woods, convenient function of communication and other accidental elements added also to the shaping of these centres of popular culture.
