Abstract:
The academic culture showed imbalance in development in the Tang Dynasty in terms of the geographic distribution of scholars and academic accomplishments. In 289 of the dynasty, eminent scholars appeared in different prefecturess. Generally, the scholars in the Tang Dynasty were mainly distributed in the Jingji area around Chang’an, the Central Plains around Luoyang, northern China around Yan and Ji states, and Jiangsu and Zhejiang around Hangzhou. The academic accomplishments, however, were mainly contributed by Guannei, Henan, Jiangnan, Hebei, Hedong, Longyou, Shangnan and Jiannan prefectures, whereas academic culture was backward in Lingnan province. These differences had something to do with different natural surroundings, social environments, cultural traditions and levels of development in different areas.
