Abstract:
The urban linguistic landscape in Macau has presented many new features after its sovereignty returned to China for two decades, reflecting the continuous influence of internationalization and globalization, as well as the increase in the degree of cultural integration between the mainland and Macau.This paper makes an indepth analysis of the urban linguistic landscape of Macau from a multimodal perspective.Findings reveal that the multilingual phenomenon in Macau’s linguistic landscape is prominent; the official language status of Portuguese is declining due to the impact of English; the differences in the use of languages and the way of information arrangement are found on the signs of different founders and in different geographical regions, revealing the complexity of the multilingual phenomenon in Macau.Meanwhile, different identities and values are reflected behind the choice of character modes.Finally, modal distributions differ in terms of different types of signage.Sign makers build different ideologies by complementing the advantages of various modes.
