Abstract:
In the Tang Dynasty, there were many tales of benediction and dreams of a divine response in the Huayue Temple, which formed a type of benediction and dream of a divine response homogeneity motif.Among these blessing tales, most were of scholars who took imperial examinations and some were of people who had great ambitions but were temporarily stuck. They hope to get the revelation, asylum and blessing of Huayue God, so as to change their destiny.Among such tales, especially in the “The Biography of Pei Ji” in two TangShu (the history of Tang Dynasty), the meritorious minister of the Tang Dynasty, Pei Ji, prayed for blessings at the Huashan Temple in his early years and dreamed of a divine response of the Huayue God.It is the earliest and the only story recorded in the official history, which is of great significance to form the prototype and paradigm of this type of motif. The emergence of such stories in the Tang Dynasty is related to the special geographical location of Mount Huashan and the folk belief function of Huayue God to predict the future and destiny of the common people, thus forming a unique aspect of Huashan belief.
